Clearing up things about different Ikuhara adaptations

anonymous asked:

i don’t understand what’s the deal with the manga and novel, it’s a ikuhara thing? he likes to have all of these stuff releasing almost at the same time as the anime? what I care is, what’s the original source?

houkagokappa answered:

Yes. It’s an Ikuhara thing, but also just marketing. The Sarazanmai manga is a spin-off story so it acts as support for the anime and fleshes out the characters more. That is, as long as it’s actually related to the anime and not an AU story. We don’t really know it yet.

The novel is written by Ikuhara and Utsumi, the same people who are writing the anime scripts. So far it’s been the same, but with some extra narration and some scenes have been shuffled around. It doesn’t matter to them that it spoils (half) the story. The fun is watching the events unfold and to see how they’re depicted in the anime. The novel might even make things easier to follow and understand, since Ikuhara anime can be quite cryptic.

To answer your question of what’s the original source, Sarazanmai has always been marketed as Ikuhara’s new original anime. The novel got made to give them more publicity. It’s also a fairly easy way for them to earn more money, since it’s expensive to make anime and Ikuhara’s series usually don’t sell that many BD’s and DVD’s.

From what I remember Yuri Kuma Arashi’s manga was completely differently from the anime. That could be the case for the Sarazanami manga too.

houkagokappa added:

To expand on this, Yurikuma Arashi’s manga was developed at the same time as the anime, by the same people (story by Ikunigomakinako, art by Akiko Morishima, who did the character designs for the series). Its serialization began one year before the anime started airing and ended one year after it finished, producing 3 volumes total. The characters are the same, but they’re slightly different and the story’s completely different with some common elements and themes.

There are also 2 Yurikuma Arashi novels written by Ikuhara, Takayo Ikami, and Kei Takahashi. The first volume was released a few weeks after the first episode came out and the second volume was released at the same time the last episode aired. Unfortunately I don’t know anything about these novels, but I’m willing to bet that they’re almost identical to the anime.

Penguindrum got 3 novels, written by Ikuhara and Kei Takahashi. The first one came out a few days before the first episode aired. It’s almost exactly the same as the anime, just like the Sarazanmai novel. Two years later Penguindrum also got a manga adaptation consisting of 4 volumes total. I only have the 1st volume, but it’s pretty much exactly the same as the anime.

Utena was another project where the anime and the manga were developed at the same time. The creators all worked closely together and took inspiration and ideas off each other. The manga and anime shares the same characters and story elements, but tell different stories. Utena also has a novel adaptation. It was released after the anime tv-series and is loosely based on the first episodes, but very loosely at that. It focuses on different characters and has changed a lot of details.

What we’ve learned from all this is that novel adaptations that are almost perfect copies of the anime script and that get published alongside the anime are common for Ikuhara. What’s new is the spin-off manga. Utena and Yurikuma Arashi’s manga were clearly meant to be another take on the same story, whereas Reo to Mabu: Futari wa Sarazanmai gives us a story that we can expect to tie in with the anime, since the focus is on two side characters and not the main cast, it ends by teasing a mystery and it’s clearly set years before the anime.

Sarazanmai 4th episode PV thoughts and observations

This week the PV is far less mysterious than the previous ones.

It starts with a crossdressing Kazuki throwing himself on Tooi.

There’s not that much to say here other than it’s a super cute scene! I guess I kinda ship them, but I also I just love seeing Kazuki have fun and smile for a change. He’s either simply teasing Tooi, or there might be some reason he needs to pretend to be more familiar with him. I’m still waiting for someone to come up to him thinking he’s Sara. Maybe he meets some crazy fan and Tooi is his excuse to get away from them? Sara’s supposed to hold a handshake event this episode and Kazuki seems to be planning something for it.

Then we see Enta politely ask Tooi to give the Plates of Hope to Kazuki. However there’s no way Tooi’s going to do that, he has his own wish to fulfill.

Now that it’s been revealed Haruka can’t walk we get to see his wheelchair in the frame!

Then we see Chikai grab Tooi’s face in a kind of weird way when they were younger. Did Tooi say something he shouldn’t have?

It’s a move that Tooi copies. He’s really looking up to his brother huh?

I’m guessing this guy is the boss?

He had some sort of encounter with Tooi when he was just a small boy. Tiny Tooi’s so cute, I hope it wasn’t anything too bad, but who am I kidding?

Next up it’s my beloved Reo and Mabu! They’re posing, because they’re fabulous like that, never mind it shouldn’t be possible for them to float around like this. Ah, with the water this must be on top of that taiko drum! Reo seems kinda happy and crazy, Mabu’s stern as always. I’m really looking forward to this scene!!!

Then there’s another shot of Tooi when he was younger, as if I’m not loving this episode way too much already. Chikai seems to console him, whatever horribleness he just had to go through. That’s kinda nice, I want them to have a strong bond and a good relationship.

This episode seems to include lots of things I’m really into. Tooi’s my favourite of the boys so I’m thrilled to have an episode that’s focused on him. I also really love backstories and seeing characters when they were younger. In addition to this I’m especially weak to stories about siblings and that’s what Tooi’s storyline is all about. Also tragedy. Plus then there’s some new scene with ReoMabu that I can’t wait to see! Compared to their scene last week, I think this might be when it’s just the two of them talking, so I’m hoping for it to reveal more about them. There’s also a short chapter in the novel that I love and can’t wait to see, that should be coming up next. However it seems like the anime isn’t following the same order as in the novel, so it might be missing from this episode.

Then I have to mention how excited I am for Nobuyuki Takeuchi being responsible for this episode!!! Penguindrum’s 9th episode, which is my favourite episode from the series and possibly my favourite episode of anything ever, was created almost solely by him. He has also worked on several Shaft shows, most notably Bakemonogatari, which has amazing visuals. It’s my personal favourite studio and style.

Sarazanmai – Fourth Dish

STORY: After being separated from his brother, the freeloader Tooi meets Enta. Enta asks him to hand over the Plates of Hope to Kazuki, however Tooi also has a wish he can’t give them away for. Meanwhile, what kind of plan will Kazuki present to Tooi, knowing about the handshake event Sara Azuma is about to hold?

Script: Kunihiko Ikuhara, Teruko Utsumi
Storyboard: Nobuyuki Takeuchi
Episode director: Nobuyuki Takeuchi

Kawausoiya – Translation

I put together the lyrics for the full version of “Kawausoiya” by combining Crunchyroll’s translation with Shippers (and tweaking it some). Note that “soiya” is a shout you use when shouldering a mikoshi, a portable Shinto shrine (usually during festivals). “Kawauso” means otter, so “Kawausoiya” is a combination of the two words.

Balls! Balls! x4
Otters! (Lies! Lies!)
We’ll steal them! (Balls! Balls!)
Society (Lies! Lies!)
We’ll steal them! (Balls! Balls!)

“That was our doing”
“That’s yesterday’s news”

Kawau- Soiya-!
Soiya! Soiya! x2

Neutered dogs, bare your teeth!
Mere insects coasting through life, live passionately!

Don’t let go of your desires! x2

We’ve attained two fates
We’re all alike, one life form

Wring out the desire! x2

Kawau- Soiya! Soiya! x5
Kawau- Soiya!
Soiya! Soiya! x2

Tear to pieces the true heart that was under control
The heat you touched, and contradicting fakes

Don’t let go of your desires! x2

Our wish is an endless night
Our meeting is a morning that won’t begin

Wring out the desire! x2

Kawau- Soiya! Soiya! x2
Kawau- Soiya!

The friendship bracelet

Anonymous asked me on tumblr:

so it’s interesting to note that the last shot in the ep 3 pv, kazuki’s leg that kicked the delinquents have a bracelet a bit different to the one that enta has on his box (it’s pink rather than green) so i kinda have to wonder if this is a flashback or not…

My reply:

There are different designs, but the one Kazuki is wearing when he kicks the bully is the same as the one in Enta’s box (green with red stripes).

However the one we see Kazuki wear in the opening scene of the first episode looks different.

It’s also the one Enta’s holding on to in the episode 3 pv.

There’s also this shot in the episode 3 pv of what seems to be a third design (unless the colouring is playing tricks on us and it’s the second one). My guess is that it’s a flashback to their Golden Combo days and that was the first version of the bracelet.

I wonder if any of these are Enta’s, since aren’t you supposed to get friendship bracelets in pairs? Like if that blue one is Enta’s maybe something happens to him and Kazuki starts wearing his bracelet?

I think that the first scene is incredibly important and that it’ll turn out it’s a reference to the ending (similar to Penguindrum). Alternatively it’s a flashback. Maybe the blue bracelet was originally Kazuki’s but he threw it away or lost it and Enta retrieved it.

They actually highlight the bracelet while they show Kazuki running along Sumida, so it’s definitely important in the grand scheme of things and not just for Enta himself.

I’m hoping that the bracelet situation in the next episode will help us make more sense of this. Right now my theory is that Enta dies or disappears. Or maybe they just start dating or rekindle their friendship or something and it’s Haruka who disappears since it’s his voice that Kazuki hears here?

Whatever it is, there’s something painful going on here!! Mark my words!

Sarazanmai 3rd episode PV thoughts and observations

Kizu means kiss, but it’s also the Japanese name for sillago, a type of fish. Looks like Kazuki’s lucky item of the day is kizu and that’s why he’s standing outside a store that sells the fish kind.

Unfortunately I don’t think a fish will work for this. Look at those background photos!

I think Otone will tease Enta over Kazuki. This episode she’s gonna put on the friendship bracelet Enta got for Kazuki and get taken away by the zombies. She knows what’s up.

Also Enta, I see your traditional wear and I appreciate it!

We’ll get a flashback of Kazuki and Enta’s Golden Combo days.

Then Enta meets up with Haruka. He’s holding the friendship bracelet and the tone is enthusiastic so I’m guessing Haruka encourages him to give it to Kazuki?

He meets Tooi next. Enta’s beaten up, but it was probably not Tooi’s doing which we’ll see later (although looking at the colour of the sky, the time-frame confuses me. The sun hasn’t set here yet).

Before that we’re shown Reo and Mabu.

I love them? That’s all I have to say really. Well I’m also happy they seem to be getting more scenes, especially standing on this construction. I think their dance number was supposed to be different each time? It would be fun to get another one next episode, but I’m also fine without since that means there’s more time left for completely new scenes (that can also be used for other stock footage scenes instead).

Back to Enta, these guys are the ones who beat him up. They’re both soccer players that I think were on opposing teams to Kazuki and Enta’s (you can spot them in the flashback). The reason for the beatdown could relate to them losing to him, but I’ve also seen people speculate it’s due to homophobia.

Poor Enta 😦

It seems to happen again later on

Luckily for him this time Kazuki appears and beats them up!

Like I mentioned earlier the sky here is yellowish, so I’m not sure about the time-frame. This probably leads up to another confrontation with a zombie as well as Enta’s feelings towards Kazuki.

I can’t wait to see how it plays out!

Sarazanmai PV – third dish

Sara: Sarazanmai, the third dish
Enta: I just do what I want to do, honestly. My career may be long, but since I’m self-taught I’d say it would be presumptions to call myself a pro. The only thing I can say is I guess I’m happy for having met someone who I wanna kiss hahaha*
Sara: The sound of eating, munch munch munch
Enta: Huh, something’s coming out!?

*tl note: not his exact phrase. I’m not 100% on this line, but it’s smth to that extent
